How to Care for Your Handmade Gemstone Bracelet — A Complete Guide from Ocean Rielle Studio
Share
At Ocean Rielle Studio, every bracelet is handcrafted from carefully selected natural gemstones — Red Candy Agate, Grey-White Agate, Blue Sugar-Heart Agate, Hetian Jade, and more. Because these are natural materials, they respond to your environment, your skin, and how you handle them. This guide will help you keep each piece looking its best, so it can stay with you for years to come.
1. When to Take Your Bracelet Off
Building a simple habit of removing your bracelet in certain situations goes a long way:
- Before washing hands, showering, or swimming: Water — especially chlorinated or salty water — weakens the elastic cord over time and can dull the surface of stones like Candy Agate and Hetian Jade. Even tap water with minerals can leave residue.
- Before applying lotion, sunscreen, or perfume: Let these products fully absorb into your skin first. The chemicals in them can gradually erode gemstone surfaces and cause discoloration, particularly on more porous stones.
- Before exercise or heavy physical activity: Sweat is mildly acidic and can affect both the stone surface and the cord. It also increases the risk of accidental impact or snagging.
- Before sleeping: Wearing your bracelet to bed puts repeated stress on the elastic cord and increases the chance of it snapping. It also risks scratching both the stones and your skin.
2. How to Clean Your Bracelet
Regular, gentle cleaning keeps your stones bright and prevents buildup from daily wear.
- Routine wipe-down: After each wear, use a soft, lint-free cloth (such as a microfiber cloth) to gently wipe each bead. This removes skin oils, sweat, and light dust before they have a chance to build up.
- Deeper clean (when needed): Dampen a soft cloth slightly with plain water — not dripping wet — and gently wipe the beads. Immediately follow with a dry cloth and let the bracelet air-dry fully in a shaded area before storing or wearing again.
- What to avoid: Never soak your bracelet in water, and never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, bleach, ammonia, or acidic solutions. These can damage the elastic cord, crack stones, or strip the natural finish. This applies to all pieces in our Ember and Radiance Collections.
- For Hetian Jade pieces: Hetian Jade can develop a gentle patina over time from contact with natural skin oils — this is considered a positive quality by many. A soft dry cloth is usually all you need. Avoid chemical cleaners entirely.
3. Storing Your Bracelet Properly
How you store your bracelet between wears matters just as much as how you clean it.
- Keep it away from direct sunlight: UV exposure over time can cause color fading, especially in our Blue Sugar-Heart Agate and Red Candy Agate pieces. Store in a drawer, jewelry box, or opaque pouch rather than on a sunny windowsill or vanity tray in direct light.
- Store individually: Natural gemstones can scratch each other — and harder stones can scratch softer ones. Keep each bracelet in its own soft pouch or compartment to prevent surface damage.
- Avoid heat and humidity: Car dashboards, bathroom counters, and windowsills in summer are not ideal storage spots. High heat can dry out elastic cord and affect resin-coated or dyed stones.
- Don’t hang bracelets long-term: Leaving elastic bracelets hanging for extended periods can stretch the cord. Lay them flat or store in a pouch instead.
4. Elastic Cord Care & When to Re-string
The elastic cord is the most wear-sensitive part of any beaded bracelet. With proper care, it can last a long time — but it does have a lifespan.
- Signs it may be time to re-string: the bracelet feels looser than when you first received it, the cord looks frayed or discolored near the knot, or beads have started shifting unevenly.
- Avoid overstretching when putting the bracelet on. Roll it gently over your hand rather than pulling it wide.
- If you’d like your Ocean Rielle Studio bracelet re-strung, please reach out to us — we’re happy to advise.
5. Quick Reference by Collection
- Ember Collection (Red Candy Agate): Hard-wearing and vibrant. Wipe after each use, avoid chemical contact, and store away from sunlight to maintain the rich red tone.
- Radiance Collection (Grey-White & Blue Sugar-Heart Agate): Lovely color variations that benefit from shade storage. Clean gently; avoid prolonged UV exposure.
- Heart Sutra & Hetian Jade pieces: Treat with extra care — no chemicals, no soaking. A dry cloth and mindful wearing habits are all these pieces need.
- Double-Wrap styles: The longer cord on double-wrap bracelets sees more stress than single-wrap styles. Be especially mindful of avoiding water and overstretching.
A Note on Energy & Intention
Many of our customers choose their bracelet for its symbolic meaning — whether it’s the abundance of the Five Gods of Wealth design, the protection carried in the Heart Sutra beads, or the everyday calm of a Joy & Peace bracelet. Caring for your bracelet is also a way of honoring the intention behind it. A clean, well-kept stone is thought by many traditions to hold and radiate its energy more clearly.
